35 refugees reach Karşıyaka shores last weekend


 

A total of 35 refugees who were trying to illegally enter North Cyprus were detected on the Girne (Kyrenia) Karşıyaka (Vasileia) Beach. Among the refugees there were 5 children between the ages of 2-9, 4 women and 26 men between the ages of 15-50.

The refugees, who were detected by Lapta (Lapithos) police officers on March 23, were arrested and brought to court in Girne (Kyrenia).

The Prosecutor stated that the refugees will be staying at the Yıldız Student Dormitory at first step and will be detained for one day.

The prosecutor added that the refugee children’s needs will be met by Social Services and that they are being taken care of.

The judge ordered the refugees to be detained for 1 day for investigation purposes.

A police statement said that the individuals who helped the refugees to be smuggled into the country were caught by the Turkish Coast Guards. An investigation is ongoing.
