Smallpox has been detected at a barn in Hamitköy (Hamit Mandres).
A vaccination process, for all of the small cattle registered at the barn, has begun, the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources (North Cyprus) announced.
According to information from the Ministry and upon a notification received by the Veterinary Department on 13 June, smallpox was detected as a result of blood samples taken from animals at the farm in Hamitköy.
6 small cattle at the farm, showing symptoms of the disease were culled, it has been reported.
Meanwhile, a preventive vaccination process against the smallpox disease was implemented for 110 sheep and goats that were at the barn but did not show any symptoms.
Within the framework of the Animal Health Law, quarantine measures are being taken in Hamitköy for 2 months as a precautionary measure.
It has been determined that the disease detected in the region was transmitted by a producer, who violated the quarantine rules applied in Gazimağusa, (Famagusta) buying and selling livestock.
Those responsible have received fines and necessary complaints have been filed to the police for a further investigation.
