High levels of dust in the atmosphere

The Meteorology Service has warned of high concentrations of dust in the atmosphere and the public is urged to avoid spending too much time in open spaces.

Dust particles transported from North Africa will be effective until midnight tonight.

Overnight will be mostly clear, with a chance of light rains in the west and on the north-west coasts. Temperatures will drop to 8C in the interior, 10C on the coasts.

Winds will be mainly south- to north-westerly, weak to moderate, up to 4 Beaufort. The sea will be calm to slightly rough.

Thursday will start off clear with afternoon rains expected, mainly in the mountains and the east, and evening rains, mainly in the west.

On Friday, increased clouds are expected to bring rains and isolated storms island wide, continuing into the weekend.

Temperatures will gradually drop by Friday reaching close to average for the season, with a slight rise expected again on Saturday.

The elderly, children, and other vulnerable groups are urged to stay indoors until the dust passes and levels return to normal.
