FM “The interference of the UN Peacekeeping Force is unacceptable”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared that the United Nations Peacekeeping Force (UNFICYP)’s interference against road work of the Pile (Pyla) – Yiğitler (Arsos) road is unacceptable.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also issued a press statement following the UN’s intervention against the road work of the Pile-Yiğitler road.

The statement said that road works on the Pile-Yiğitler road had begun yesterday in order to facilitate the access of citizens living in the village of Pile to other areas of North Cyprus.

“It is very clear that; the road work project has a pure humanitarian purpose. Despite the situation, the UN peacekeeping force physically intervened on North Cyprus territory against the police who were present to ensure security and the working team. The UNFICYP’s attitude towards this matter is unacceptable.” The statement said.

It was claimed that UNFICYP’s statement and similar statements of other countries distorted the situation.

“These allegations are distorted. We only had police in the area. The duty of Turkish Cypriot police is to ensure the safety of civilian teams that carry out road works. Tensions in the region was caused due to the attitude and physical behavior of the UN soldiers and personnel towards the team, doing their work and the police that were in the area to ensure the safety of the civilians.”
