KEMA proposes the creation of a Nature Fund

The Cyprus Foundation for Combating Erosion, Afforestation and Protection of Natural Assets (KEMA) suggested that a “Nature Fund” be established immediately to be used in the rehabilitation of the damage caused to the environment by the construction sector.
Issuing a statement, the foundation pointed to the importance on the protection of the country’s fertile land areas and put forward various suggestions.
It was requested that a construction ban or restriction be imposed on productive agricultural areas.
In the statement, it was noted that nearly half of the country’s fertile land area has become a construction site, and that intense concreting continues rapidly in carob groves, olive groves, maquis and all kinds of green areas.
“If steps are not taken to prevent construction in these areas, in the near future, we will have no choice but to import carob and olives,” the statement said.
