A bi-communal event held in Gazimağusa


 

The Gazimağusa (Famagusta) Municipality and Famagusta Municipality in South Cyprus organized a “We are together” event on September 21, International World Peace Day.

The main opposition party (CTP) leader Tufan Erhürman, General Secretary of AKEL Stephanos Stephanou, MPs from CTP and AKEL parties, Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), Colin Stewart, the United States ambassador to Cyprus Julie D. Fisher, the Ambassador of Italy to Cyprus, H.E. Federica Ferrari Bravo, British High Commissioner to Cyprus Irfan Siddiq, European Parliament (EP) Prof. Niyazi Kızılyürek, and other officials were also present at the event held at the Gazimağusa (Famagusta) Walled City Sea Gate (Next to Othello Castle).

Songs were sung in two languages at the event for Cyprus and for world peace, and and hopes for unity and peace in Cyprus were shared.

The event, which included the a ‘Lets Sing Together’ concert, continued with stories of peace and a poetry recital accompanied by a piano.

Gazimağusa (Famagusta) Mayor Dr. Süleyman Uluçay and South Famagusta Mayor Dr. Simos Ioannou made a speech during the event.

Speaking at the event, Gazimağusa (Famagusta) Mayor Dr. Süleyman Uluçay said that Cyprus should be a bridge of cooperation and friendship between the two great states.
Instead of anger and resentment, let’s inspire hope and peace to our children, Uluçay said and expressed hope that the pain of the past will never be repeated.
South Famagusta Mayor Dr. Simos Ioannou emphasized the importance of development, culture, education and sports for peace.


Pointing out that Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Armenians, and Latins can all live together in a single homeland, in peace and friendship, Ioannou said: “Those who hate war and conflict, let’s keep the flag of peace high, not primarily for ourselves, but for our children, grandchildren and future generations.”
