Police on Monday issued a warning about a new WhatsApp scam that promises significant investment returns. The electronic fraud department reported receiving numerous complaints about messages from foreign sources urging WhatsApp users to engage in lucrative investments.
“The scammers promise high returns, which are unrealistic. The public should only trust companies licensed by the Cyprus Securities to avoid the risk of fraud,” said Andreas Anastasiades of the department.
He mentioned that some individuals have fallen victim to the scam. “Fortunately, the amounts lost were not substantial. The scammers typically ask for more money once the initial investment is made, which raises suspicion,” he explained.
Anastasiades noted that tracking down the fraudsters and recovering the money is challenging because the funds are not transferred through banks but via other methods.
The police advise anyone receiving such messages to report them and then delete them.
