A review into the delayed response to the murder in Paphos

An investigation into the police reaction time in connection with the murder of a 41-year-old woman in Paphos resulted in the suspension of two police officers on Saturday. Seven cops are involved in the disciplinary investigation as a result of reports that Petya Krateva, the woman, and her ex-husband got into a fight and that police did not show up fast enough.

When the altercation started on Friday, the neighbours said that they called the police as soon as possible. However, they had to go through several departments before getting through to the right officers, who then responded. The police may have saved the woman’s life, according to the neighbours, who claimed that they arrived late.

According to a report by an officer examining the police response, more investigation was required, according to police spokesman Christos Andreou. As a result, a disciplinary investigation into seven police officers has been assigned to an investigating officer.

Andreou went on to say that the investigating officer will also look into whether the proper steps were done to find and apprehend the suspect promptly after an arrest warrant was obtained in response to the victim’s accusation of family violence offences.

TWO POLICE OFFICERS SUSPENDED

Marios Hartsiotis, the minister of justice, had authorised the investigation.

He said: “Rest assured that if the investigation proves that there was any negligence in any parts concerning the police, blame will be assigned.”

He reiterated the sensitivity of both the president and himself on this matter to ensure that accountability if and when there is any accountability to anyone is assigned.

A 48-year-old man was detained for eight days on Saturday in connection with his ex-wife’s murder at Tremithousa, Paphos, the previous day. Following a fight with his ex-wife on Friday, the guy was taken into custody at the hospital. During the fight, the woman was allegedly fatally stabbed and then shoved off the balcony as neighbours attempted to call the police.

Petya Krateva, from Bulgaria, was brought to the hospital and later declared dead. The police claim that on Saturday morning at around ten in the morning, a post-mortem examination was completed. The results showed that Krateva’s internal bleeding from a sharp item was the cause of her death.

Nicholas Charalambous, a state pathologist, performed the examination at Paphos General Hospital.

The 48-year-old suspect said at the remand hearing that Krateva paid him a visit on Friday morning to talk about their issues. He asserted that on June 11, 2024, at the Paphos Police Station’s Office of the Family Violence Unit, she had filed a complaint against him, and that she had requested money to have the complaint removed.

He said she struck him first after a furious confrontation that resulted from his refusal. He claimed he lost consciousness and was unaware of what had happened.

More than forty statements from the victim’s and suspect’s friends and relatives are anticipated as part of the ongoing investigation. Scientific testing will be done, and the area’s surveillance footage will also be examined.
