With temperatures expected to soar as high as 41 degrees Celsius inland on Wednesday afternoon, the Meteorology Office issued a yellow weather warning on Tuesday for hours between 12:00 and 17:30.
Furthermore, the forestry department issued a “red alert” for forest fires and noted that setting a fire in a forest without a permit is illegal and can result in up to ten years in prison, a €50,000 fine, or both.
They urged people to “avoid actions which are likely to cause a fire” and to exercise “extra caution during their outings” in forests.
“The use of tools or agricultural machinery which produce heat, sparks, or flames, such as an angle grinder or a welding torch,” is one example of such an act, the statement stated.
They also said that anyone observing smoke or fire in a forest should call the fire department at 112 or the forestry department at 1407.
