AKEL Congress outlines new beginnings

The left wing AKEL party members have approved changes with the aim to turn party into being a renewed, strong, modern, large party of the Left.
The works of the AKEL Statutory Congress were completed on Sunday, November 26.
Statutory Congress marked a new beginning for AKEL.

In his introductory speech, General Secretary of the Central Committee, of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, spoke of a beginning that differentiates the internal way of party’s operation at various levels, but a beginning that also expresses the strengthening of extroversion in the way the party interacts with society.
Also, from the podium of the Statutory Congress, Stefanos Stefanou announced that they are very close to the conclusion of a Social Alliance, which will constitute a political platform, which, in relation to the institution of the New Forces, it will be qualitatively upgraded in three main pillars: 1. ) It will be based on a specific political agenda, which will be the compass of a broader progressive space with AKEL. 2.) It will have a loose structure, which will enable the platform to have more visibility in society and a better two-way relationship with the party. 3.) It will enable enhanced participation in the party’s discussion and fermentation processes.
Among the changes approved from the Congress are a) the reduction of the terms of the MPs/MEPs from three to two, b) the election of the General Secretary by the Congress instead of by the Central Committee, c) that the members of the Central Committee who do not work professionally in AKEL and popular organizations to constitute at least the 60% of the body, d)incompatibility of the offices of the Central Organizational Secretary, District Secretary and District Organizational Secretary with the public offices of the MP, MEP, mayor and president of the District Organization.
