AKEL to hold protest outside Presidential Palace

AKEL has announced a protest event in response to the Supreme Constitutional Court’s decision to suspend Auditor General Odysseus Michaelides.

According to a statement from the party, “Against the system of corruption and cover-up, AKEL – Left – Social Alliance will hold a protest on Sunday, September 22, at 4:00 p.m. outside the Presidential Palace.”

AKEL’s General Secretary, Stefanos Stefanou, stated that “following the suspension of the Auditor General, no one can remain indifferent to the institutional corruption and entanglement that has taken root during the Anastasiades administration.

This system not only harms Cyprus internationally but also erodes public trust in institutions and undermines the rule of law. It protects the perpetrators of scandals by obstructing oversight, transparency, and accountability.”

Stefanou added, “The public’s patience has run out. We stand firmly against this System of Corruption and Cover-Up and demand that it be dismantled. The President and his government bear the primary responsibility for this situation.”

He emphasized that fighting corruption requires action, not just statements, something he claimed has been lacking from the government.

“We are standing against this system of corruption and cover-up. I urge all citizens who feel suffocated by the current situation to join us in protest on Sunday outside the Presidential Palace,” Stefanou concluded.
