The Akrotiri Environmental and Education Centre (AEEC) commemorated World Wetlands Day on February 2 with a community event designed to highlight the importance of the vital ecosystems present in the Akrotiri wetlands.
Visitors had the opportunity to explore interactive dioramas, try their hand at traditional basket weaving, and watch a documentary that showcased the rich diversity of wildlife found on the Akrotiri peninsula.
Attendees utilized telescopes to observe various species and learned about the unique insects and vegetation that contribute to the area’s thriving biodiversity.
The day was charged with excitement as AEEC manager Thomas Hadjikyriakou welcomed guests and underscored the significance of the occasion.
“World Wetlands Day is a major event worldwide, and we always take pleasure in welcoming people to the centre,” Hadjikyriakou remarked. “It’s an invaluable opportunity to educate visitors about the importance of wetlands and to showcase the remarkable work our staff conducts.”
Georgia Theodorou, AEEC Assistant, elaborated on the purpose of the event, stating, “This was a heartfelt tribute to the hidden paradise of Akrotiri’s wetlands, a designated Ramsar site of international importance. Our aim was to enhance awareness about the vital role these ecosystems play in sustaining biodiversity and supporting our communities. By exploring the beauty and diversity of our wetlands, we hope to inspire a deeper appreciation and commitment to protecting these precious habitats for future generations.”
