Plans to improve the existing airport-Paphos road and explore an alternative route are being considered, according to Giorgos Mais, President of the Paphos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (EBE).
Mais revealed that EBE Paphos had a meeting with experts working with the Department of Environment to discuss the road to Paphos airport, exchanging views on potential improvements. He mentioned that both the enhancement of the current road and possible alternative routes were examined, though some practical and legal issues were identified.
Paphos-Polis Road
On the Paphos-Polis road project, Mais shared that Transport Minister Alexis Vafeadis recently informed them that the contractor had submitted proposals regarding the suitability of the construction materials. While these proposals seem acceptable in theory, Public Works has requested evidence of their application in other projects. The contractor has committed to providing the necessary data.
Paphos Marina
Regarding Paphos Marina in Potima, Mais noted that consultants have been hired by the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, who were expected to deliver their findings by September 12. These have been submitted, and the Deputy Ministry will begin consultations with various stakeholders within the next two weeks.
Mais mentioned that he had spoken with the Deputy Minister of Tourism, who is currently abroad, and was informed that once the minister returns to Cyprus, they will discuss adjustments to the terms that previously deterred investors. The revised terms are expected by early 2025, with a formal announcement projected for July 2025.
Road from Tombs of the Kings to Pegeia
Mais also addressed the road project from the Tombs of the Kings to Pegeia, stating that the tender for its study has been awarded. However, the 32-month timeline for completing the study has raised concerns. The Ministry of Transport explained that the extended timeframe is due to the involvement of multiple departments. EBE Paphos has suggested, with agreement from the Ministry and the researcher, that studies should run in parallel to reduce the overall time required.
