Match Day 3 for the League Phase of the UEFA Conference League turned out particularly positive for Cyprus football and the Cyprus teams. APOEL of Nicosia and Paphos FC achieved great victories over the Italian team Fiorentina and over Astana, the team from Kazakhstan, respectively.
APOEL achieved a historic European victory by defeating Fiorentina in the GSP Stadium with 2-1. With this win, APOEL reached 4 points and climbed in 18th place in the group. After the victory APOEL sees its future in the Conference League with optimism.
Paphos FC achieved a huge victory at the “Alfamega” Stadium in Limassol, beating Astana 1-0. This was the second win of the team in the group phase and with 6 points climbed in the 9th position of the Standings. At the same time, this win was a huge boost to qualify for the next phase of “16”, either directly if they end at the top 8 or in the knockout phase.
Omonia of Nicosia despite its positive performance, was defeated in Belgium by Gent by 1-0. The “greens” could have at least gained the point from a draw, but in the second half they missed significant chances to qualify. Omonia remained with 3 points in 3 games and holds the 21st place in the Standings.
