Audit Service’s report finds serious security gaps in the Police

The Audit Service finds serious security gaps among its many findings for the Report it prepared for the Cyprus Police ( South-Cyprus), which was made public today.
Reading the Report, one can easily conclude that there are very serious security gaps in cases of storage of weapons and ammunition, as well as sloppiness in matters of control and surveillance, as well as prevention.
An example of the sloppiness that prevails in the body, is the finding of the Service in a specific warehouse of weapons/ammunition. Specifically, a total of 112 pistols of a certain type were counted by the storekeeper, while their total quantity, according to the regulations of publications, amounts to 114. The deficit in question was not investigated by the Officers during the essential time but was detected for the first time during the inspection of the Service. It is noted that this was due to several administrative errors and not to the loss of armament.
Another important finding is placement, inside an arms/ammunition depot, of a motor vehicle loaded with 303,000 firecrackers which had been seized, in violation of fundamental rules/instructions for the safety of ammunition/explosives.
At the same time, the Audit Service identified a storage warehouse for weapons/ammunition without a double safety valve, while at a distance of ten meters from them, there are nine containers and four canopies, which are used as storage areas by various Police Departments. The noteworthy thing is that at a distance of 12 meters from the above warehouse there is an above-ground storage (tank) of petroleum products with a capacity of two tons, which borders on flammable materials without the existence of a fire station.
Another interesting fact is that a total of 13 service pistols were stolen from police officers while one of them was found in a criminal act.
