Beekeepers in North Cyprus sin to boost productivity of native bee species

Turkish Cypriot beekeepers are stepping up efforts to improve the productivity of the resilient but less-productive Cypriot bee species, aiming to strengthen honey production across the island.

According to the Topçuköy (Agios Andronikos ) Honey and Beekeeping Association, the village of Topçuköy alone accounts for 25 percent of North Cyprus’s honey output. The community celebrated its rich beekeeping heritage at the 4th Topçuköy Honey Festival, held over the weekend.

In his opening remarks, Derviş Osum, President of the Topçuköy Honey and Beekeeping Association, highlighted the village’s 130-year beekeeping tradition and its vital role in the country’s honey production.

Hasan Kozok, President of the Beekeepers’ Union, said ongoing projects—supported by İskele Municipality—aim to boost honey yields and double the number of bee colonies, while preserving the native Cypriot bee’s resilience to local conditions.

Following the speeches, the İskele Municipality Folk Dance Ensemble took the stage with traditional performances. The festivities continued with music and dance by DJ Show, Group Armanila, the Gazimağusa Cultural Association Women’s Rhythm Group, and the Retro Musicians Ensemble, adding colour and energy to the lively celebration.
