The 26th edition of Büyükkonuk ( Komi Kebir) Eco Day was held on Sunday, drawing crowds to the village square for a colourful celebration of Cypriot traditions, cuisine, crafts, and music.
Jointly organised by the Mehmetçik Büyükkonuk Municipality and the Büyükkonuk Eco Tourism Association, the event showcased Turkish Cypriot cultural heritage through live performances, local food stalls, and traditional handicrafts.
The festival opened with a dance performance by the Karpaz Girls, followed by remarks from organisers and community leaders. Association President Luis Cemal emphasised the importance of preserving the unique cultural identity of Turkish Cypriots for future generations.
Mayor Dr. Fatma Çimen Tuğlu of Mehmetçik Büyükkonuk described Eco Day as more than a tribute to the past, calling it “a guide for the future.”
Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar, who attended the celebration, praised the diversity of cultural, artistic, and culinary traditions on display, calling the event a reflection of the Turkish Cypriot national identity. He expressed optimism for the development of the İskele and Karpaz regions, referring to them as the “shining star of the Eastern Mediterranean.”
The day featured numerous activities and was further enlivened by a special costume show titled “Traces of a Future in Cyprus’ Nature,” curated by Bülent Günkut, adding a creative flair to the festivities.
