Cape Drepanon unveils important archaeological findings


 

Early Christian basilicas, a baptistery and a necropolis are among the important findings of the archaeological excavations at Cape Drepanon, on the west coast of Paphos.
A lecture was held on Saturday where experts discussed the findings and among other things it was noted that Cape Drepanon was a commercial, religious and strategic hub from antiquity to the Byzantine period.
Akamas Mayor Marinos Lambrou said that the authorities intend to build an archaeological museum near the area.
Dr. Charalambos Bakirtzis, an internationally renowned archaeologist and director of the Greek Archaeological Mission to Agios Georgios Peyia was the keynote speaker and during his lecture he analysed, in detail, the historical and archaeological significance of the area, making extensive reference to the findings of the excavations.
He spoke about the naval connection between Paphos and Alexandria, Egypt, as well as the historical significance of the quarries in the area.
Akamas Mayor said that the museum is a project to promote the significance of the area and it will have a total cost of 1.5 mln euro.
