Carob producers recently convened to discuss the challenges they are facing, particularly uncertainty in the market and declining prices.
During a meeting held at the Büyükkonuk Olive Cooperative, Hürrem Tulga, the General Coordinator of the Chamber of Tradesmen and Craftsmen, highlighted the difficulties confronting carob producers.
According to a report by BRT, Tulga noted that although the carob harvest has begun, ongoing uncertainties have left much of the produce on the branches. He criticized the lack of clear policy direction from relevant institutions, which has led to carobs being exposed to rain and sun, diminishing their quality and causing significant losses.
Tulga also pointed out that discussions with both Türkiye and South Cyprus revealed that the prices set in the stock market are low and insufficient for producers. He stressed that the problems faced by carob producers could be addressed through government policies and incentives.
Bekir Bolatcan, President of the Carob Producers Association, also voiced concerns, stating that certain traders are exploiting producers for their own gain. He warned that this exploitation is creating serious problems for the carob industry, further complicating the situation for already struggling producers.
