Child experiences vision loss from Laser Pointer

The Ophthalmology Clinic at Archbishop Makarios III Hospital has reported a case where a child suffered permanent vision loss in one eye due to retinal burns caused by a laser pointer.

According to a statement from the State Health Services Organisation (SHSO), the injury occurred while the child was playing with a laser pointer purchased online and staring directly into the beam. This resulted in “multiple retinal burns of the choroid,” a crucial layer at the back of the eye essential for vision.

The SHSO has urged parents to exercise caution regarding the safe use and suitability of products in children’s possession. They emphasized that users of laser toys should never look directly into the beam or aim it at others, mirrors, or reflective surfaces.

Highlighting the severity of laser pointer injuries, the SHSO stated that damage caused by the beam, even from several meters away, is often irreversible.
