Greek Cypriot leader , Nikos Christodoulides, said on Friday that he discussed with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis the issue of the electricity interconnection, noting that when there are specific decisions by the Greek Government, this will be announced by Athens.
Ιn statements to the media in Nicosia, after the bicommunal awards ceremony of Sir Stelios Hadjiioannou’s philanthropic foundation and, asked to comment on Turkey’s reactions regarding the interconnection, Christodoulides said that following discussions with EU officials and the President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, but also on Friday with the Commissioner for the Mediterranean, Dubravka Šuica, who is paying a visit to Cyprus, he could convey “the EU’s strong dissatisfaction with such statements concerning a project of European public interest that is financed by the EU itself”.
Therefore, he added, such positions, which are surely negative, are also monitored by the EU.
Asked about the possibility of an escalation, Christodoulides said, “certainly, no actions will be taken on our part that would lead to an escalation of the situation”.
