Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides, on Sunday said he has spoken with the UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy on Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin, noting that they have set a preliminary date for a meeting in May.
In statements to journalists on Sunday, arriving at an event in Nicosia, and, asked if he had had any contact with Holguin, Christodoulides said that he had spoken with her. “Indeed, her contract officially starts on May 12, we have also exchanged some dates for a meeting, but I will let her announce this,” he said.
He added that they have a set preliminary date for a meeting with Holguin who, as he said, will be in Cyprus in May, but that she would announce the specific dates.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, following the agreement of the two leaders during the informal meeting in Cyprus in a broader format, held in Geneva on 17 and 18 March, announced earlier this month that he has asked Holguín to re-engage with the parties in order to work on the next steps on the Cyprus issue and advise him. Holguin completed a previous assignment as Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General on Cyprus from January to July 2024.
