Greek Cypriot Leader Nikos Christodoulides departs for Lebanon today for meetings with the country’s leadership on the increased flow of irregular Syrian migrants from the country to Cyprus.
He is expected to convey the messages to Lebanon regarding the recent migrant influx from Lebanon to Cyprus which has been discussed during a meeting with President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, yesterday.
A Presidency press release said Christodoulides will be received by Lebanese PM Najib Mikati.
After an official welcoming ceremony, Christodoulides will have a tete-a-tete meeting with Mikati followed by expanded talks between the delegations of the two countries.
He will also have a meeting with the country’s Speaker Nabih Berri.
Christodoulides will be accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Interior Minister, the Government Spokesman, the commander of the National Guard and other officials.
Christodoulides-Von der Leyen discussed migratory flows
Meanwhile, Christodoulides met with the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, in Athens on the occasion of the 15th Congress of the New Democracy on Sunday.
According to information from the Cyprus News Agency, in a private meeting between the two, the main topic of discussion was the management of the increased migratory flows from Lebanon in recent days and specific ways to prevent this phenomenon through more active EU involvement.
Additionally, they discussed the messages President Christodoulides is expected to convey to Lebanon tomorrow on behalf of the EU.
It is noted that this issue is expected to be discussed at the upcoming Informal European Council.
Earlier, Christodoulides had a private meeting with the Greek Prime Minister to discuss the latest developments in Cyprus and the continuation of Greece-Cyprus cooperation and coordination in light of upcoming discussions.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis reiterated Greece’s steadfast support for the Cypriot initiative “Amalthea” for the humanitarian corridor to Gaza.
The two leaders also discussed the new migration flows in Cyprus, which are causing great concern for a new migration route due to the ongoing instability and violence in the Middle East.
