Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides is in Madrid for meetings in the framework of his overseas visits ahead of Cyprus’ Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2026.
He will then travel to Lisbon for contacts and then to Valencia, Spain, to participate in the European People’s Party (EPP) Congress.
According to a press release issued by the Presidency, Christodoulides is meeting today at 13.00 (Cyprus time), with the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. Later at 14.30, he will meet with King Felipe of Spain at the Palace, with whom he will then attend a lunch, while in the afternoon, he will depart for Lisbon.
Tomorrow Christodoulides will meet with the Prime Minister of Portugal, Luis Montenegro, at the Prime Minister’s Office, while after their meeting, expanded talks between the delegations of the two countries will take place.
Christodoulides’s consultations in Spain and Portugal will focus on the priorities of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU, issues related to the broader European agenda, developments in the Cyprus problem, bilateral relations and the situation in the Middle East.
After the talks, he will depart for Valencia to participate in the EPP Congress.
During the Congress elections will be held to select the new EPP leadership, while in the evening a dinner will be held, attended by, among others, the leaders of the EPP member countries and the new leadership, the press release said.
The Summit’s proceedings will continue on April 30, and Christodoulides will make an intervention, while on the sidelines of the Summit he will hold bilateral meetings.
He returns home on the evening of April 30.
