The recent installation of container classrooms at Lefke Gazi High School has ignited a heated debate within the local community, drawing sharp criticism from community leaders. Teoman Oktay, serving as the Coordinator of the Lefke Non-Governmental Organizations Platform, has emerged as a vocal opponent of this temporary solution, arguing that the funds allocated for these container classrooms could be more effectively used for permanent improvements to the school’s infrastructure.
Oktay’s statement, “Container classrooms cannot be the fate of Lefke Gazi High School and the people of Lefke,” encapsulates the frustration felt by many in the community. This sentiment reflects a deeper concern about the quality and safety of educational facilities in the area.
The Lefke Gazi High School Parents’ Association and parents have expressed their unwillingness to have their children attend classes in buildings they perceive as dangerous. Responding to these concerns, Oktay has called for the allocation of necessary funds in the 2025 financial budget to ensure students can receive education in a safe and secure environment.
In his critique of the current approach, Oktay provided a financial breakdown of various options. He stated that strengthening the existing school buildings would cost approximately 10 million TL, while a complete reconstruction would amount to 16 million TL.
In contrast, the container classrooms are estimated to cost 10.5 million TL. Oktay described this expenditure on temporary classrooms, which will eventually be dismantled, as “money to be thrown away,” highlighting the community’s preference for long-term solutions over quick fixes.
