Winds of Change, the groundbreaking initiative founded by Cypriot Olympian and IOC Young Leader Sophia Papamichalopoulos, has been awarded the Diplomatic Action of the Year at the Peace and Sport Awards 2024 in Monaco.
The honor was presented in the presence of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco, Peace and Sport President Joël Bouzou, and Peace and Sport Vice President Didier Drogba.
The Peace and Sport Awards, established in 2008, celebrate exceptional efforts to use sport as a tool for peace, dialogue, and reconciliation in divided or conflict-affected communities.
The Diplomatic Action of the Year award specifically honors initiatives that use sport as a vehicle to enhance mutual understanding, foster international cooperation, and create opportunities for reconciliation. Winds of Change stood out for its innovative approach and its tangible impact in uniting communities in Cyprus and beyond.
Sophia Papamichalopoulos’ Winds of Change is a pioneering peace-building initiative that brings together Cypriot youth from both sides of the island through sailing and Olympic values, with the support of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). In 2023, the program reached a historic milestone with the first circumnavigation of Cyprus in 50 years. By promoting teamwork, intercultural dialogue, and resilience, Winds of Change empowers young people to pursue shared goals and bridge deep-seated divides. The initiative was further celebrated with the screening of its documentary film at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, amplifying its impact on youth and peace.
“I am deeply honored to receive the Diplomatic Action of the Year award, especially after our recent recognition with the World Sailing Sustainability Award just a few weeks ago. This incredible journey wouldn’t be possible without the dedication and support of everyone who has contributed to Winds of Change. I am so proud that, just two years after its launch, our work is making an impact that is recognized on a global scale. This recognition inspires us to continue breaking barriers and creating meaningful change through sport.”
Other distinguished honorees included Sifan Hassan, awarded Champion for Peace of the Year for her inspiring journey from refugee to six-time Olympic medalist. Tony Estanguet, three-time Olympic Champion in canoe slalom and President of the Paris2024 Organizing Committee was awarded Person of the Year, in recognition for his visionary leadership in bringing the Paris 2024 Olympic Games to life.
For Winds of Change and Sophia to be recognized alongside such renowned sport personalities underscores Cyprus’ emerging role on the global stage as a leader in peace-building through sport. This award highlights the island’s potential to inspire the world with innovative solutions for overcoming division and fostering lasting connections.
