Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar and Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides agreed to advance new initiatives focused on the environment and climate change during a meeting held today at the Ledra Palace under UN auspices.
According to a statement from the UN Spokesperson, both leaders welcomed the reappointment of Ms. María Angela Holguín Cuéllar as the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy on Cyprus and expressed their anticipation of her upcoming visit to the island.
The two leaders launched the Technical Committee on Youth. They welcomed the members of the Committee and encouraged the Committee to promote dialogue and initiatives that address youth-related issues.
Subsequently, they met and welcomed and appreciated the progress achieved for the restoration of cemeteries and tasked the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage to proceed with the implementation of its work.
They also agreed on new initiatives related to the environment and climate change. Discussions continued on demining, solar energy and crossing points. The two leaders decided to continue to keep the issues under regular review and agreed to meet again soon.
