Desalination, the management and protection of water resources, treatment and reuse of wastewater, as well as reduction of water consumption and education and public awareness, are some of the issues covered by the Memorandum of Understanding signed on Thursday between the Republic of Cyprus and Malta, in Nicosia.
The Memorandum, which concerns the strengthening of bilateral cooperation in the field of water resources, was signed between the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment of the Republic of Cyprus and the Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Regeneration of the grand harbour of the Republic of Malta, by respective Ministers Maria Panayiotou, and Miriam Dalli.
According to an announcement, the signing of the MoU took place in the context of the regional conference on navigating water challenges in the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean region, organised by the European Investment Bank in Nicosia.
“The Memorandum strengthens the cooperation between Cyprus and Malta in the management and sustainability of water resources, since both countries face significant challenges due to water scarcity and drought”, it said.
At the same time, it adds, the two countries, “recognising the urgent need to address common challenges, particularly in the field of desalination and wastewater reuse (with an emphasis on agriculture), proceeded to conclude the Memorandum which creates prospects for innovative approaches and improves resilience against future water-related challenges”.
The MoU also provides for setting up a joint working group to coordinate and oversee its actions, “promoting continued cooperation and the development of long-term solutions”, according to the announcement.
