Cyprus will be technically ready to be part of the Schengen area in 2025.
“In 2025 we will be technically ready, we will have done everything we need to do, so that Cyprus can be part of Schengen,” Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides said during a discussion with editor-in-chief of the English edition of the newspaper “Kathimerini”, Athanasios Ellis, in the context of the “Beyond Sea and Sun” Conference organized by Hermes Airports in Nicosia.
The discussion focused on issues related to the development of the tourism industry. Replying to a question by Ellis, Christodoulides said that Cyprus is the only EU member state that is outside the Schengen area.
He noted that its accession will be important for both tourism and investment.
“We have addressed all political concerns in relation to the ceasefire line and are now working on the technical details, in order to enter this category,” he said. He recalled that a team was set up under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that is working on the matter.
He also referred to the travel visa for the US, saying that it is in the final stage of the process to lift the travel visa requirement.
“We expect, he added, a team from the US Government to come to Cyprus adding that announcements will be made very soon” he said.
