Dagestan terror attack fatalities rise to 22 people

The governor of Dagestan, a region in Russia, announced on Monday that another policeman had passed away in the hospital, bringing the total number of victims in the terrorist attack to 22.

Sergey Melikov addressed a gathering of civil society representatives in Makhachkala, the administrative centre of Dagestan. “Unfortunately, as a result of the terrorist attacks, 22 people were killed, 21 directly during the terrorist attacks and one police officer died the next day from severe injuries,” Melikov stated.

This raises the total number of police officers killed in the incident to 17, making it one of the highest numbers of law enforcement fatalities in Russia’s history.

On June 23, attackers broke into Orthodox churches, synagogues, and a traffic police station in the Dagestani cities of Derbent and Makhachkala.
