Different expectations in New York

Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar and Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides will meet separately with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in New York this week.
The Greek Cypriot side waits for the messages Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan will send after his meetings in New York with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
The Greek Cypriot side believes that these meetings are the most decisive of the UN-brokered reunification process which is now stalled  and the prospects that may emerge for a new initiative on the Cyprus problem.
Also they are looking forward for an appointment of a special representative by the SG, to resume the negotiations “where it has been left” which is not a favourable action considered by the Turkish Cypriot side.
Meanwhile, the Turkish Cypriot side sticks “no change policy” on the Cyprus issue.
The Turkish Cypriot side insists that they will not proceed to formal negotiations without the confirmation of the sovereign equality and equal international status of the “TRNC”.
LEADERS WILL MEET SG THIS WEEK
Christodoulides is set to have a meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres around noon on Friday and will later hold a working luncheon with the representatives of the UN Security Council Permanent Members.
Meanwhile Tatar, will meet with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for a face-to- face meeting on Saturday.
