e-FORESTER project kicks off with ceremony at CSEO Space Center in Nicosia

The e-FORESTER project, an innovative initiative aimed at revolutionising forest monitoring and conservation through advanced robotics and AI, officially launched Monday, with a kick-off ceremony held at the Cyprus Space Exploration Organisation (CSEO) Space Centre.
This is an EU-funded project and a collaboration between Cyprus, Italy and Poland to develop an autonomous robotic vehicle that will monitor forest ecosystems supporting sustainable forestry and the European Green Deal.
The event brought together key stakeholders, including the Ambassador of Poland, representatives from the Office of the Chief Scientist, the European Commission Representation in Cyprus and all project partners.
A press release says that during the ceremony the speakers highlighted the importance of the project and the value of international collaboration in addressing critical environmental challenges.
The e-FORESTER project brings significant value to both the European Union and Cyprus. It contributes to the European Green Deal by promoting sustainable forestry practices and enhancing biodiversity conservation across Europe, the press release reads.
“For Cyprus it positions the country as a leader in environmental technology and innovation, fostering economic growth, creating specialized jobs, and attracting international investment,” it adds.
e-FORESTER directly addresses critical forestry problems that Cyprus has faced, including forest fires since the project’s technology can help prevent and mitigate forest fires, which have caused significant damage in Cyprus in the past.
In Deforestation and land degradation, e-FORESTER promotes sustainable forestry practices to combat deforestation and land degradation. The project’s monitoring capabilities also help detect and manage invasive species that threaten Cyprus’s unique ecosystems.
According to the press release, as regards threats to biodiversity, e-FORESTER aids in the identification and protection of endangered species and their habitats and moreover contributes to understanding and mitigating the effects of climate change on Cyprus’s forests.
The press release also notes that the project’s advanced technology can help identify and protect archaeological sites within forested areas, preserving Cyprus’s rich cultural heritage.
The e-FORESTER project is poised to make a significant contribution to forest conservation and environmental sustainability in Cyprus and beyond.
Space Systems Solutions (S3) Ltd, the coordinator of the e-FORESTER project, is a Cyprus-based company specializing in the development of cutting-edge space technologies and applications.
The Cyprus Space Exploration Organisation (CSEO) is a leading research and innovation organisation dedicated to space research & engineering and space diplomacy. It represents Cyprus in international space organisations like COSPAR and the International Astronomical Union (IAU). CSEO is the host of COSPAR’s International Space Innovation Centre.
