Easter celebrations and St George festival unite Kormakitis village

The Maronite village of Kormakitis held its Easter celebrations, followed by the St George Festival, which united the community.

Easter is the most important celebration for Christians, commemorating the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ. The term “Easter” means “passage,” signifying Christ’s transition from death to life. While the Orthodox and Catholic Churches use different calendars for the celebration, this year the dates coincided.

Many Maronites return to their villages for Easter. Customs in these villages include traditional Easter feasts and communal gatherings, which are key aspects of the celebration.

The desire to return to their ancestral homes and churches is deeply felt within the Maronite community, reinforcing their connection to their cultural heritage.

On the morning of Good Friday, women gathered in the Church to prepare the tomb, carefully arranging it as part of a solemn tradition that marks the start of the day. Throughout the day, villagers visited the church to honour the occasion and pay their respects.

In the afternoon, the faithful participated in the Way of the Cross, commencing from the chapel of the Virgin Panagia and concluding at the Church of Agios Georgios.

The day culminated with the Good Friday ceremony held at the Church of St. George, where the community gathered for prayer. Following the service, a procession of the epitaph took place through the village streets, accompanied by haunting hymns, leading to an Easter bonfire near the town square.

Over the weekend various activities gathered the people in theme with Easter and nature. Traditional Easter games were held at the Kormakitis Centre for Cooperation, featuring activities for children such as an egg-and-spoon race, sack race, and tug of war.

Sunday evening saw the launch of the St George festival that is going to last three days while the village expects visitors.
