The British Forces Foundation (BFF) arranged for British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran to visit the Dhekelia garrison this past weekend, where he was welcomed by the troops and their families.
Despite his hectic schedule, the UK hitmaker was eager to meet military members and their enthusiastic families while in Cyprus for the last two concerts of his world-renowned Mathematics tour.
According to BFF Director Mark Cann, “For Ed to give his time and exceptional talent for four hours between two shows and a very busy schedule was an extraordinary gesture that made an incredible impact – he’s the best.”
After spending the day chatting with troops, signing autographs, taking selfies, and exchanging stories, Sheeran played a private acoustic set at the Dhekelia rugby pitch.
The concert was attended by active-duty military personnel and their families, and Sheeran performed a selection of his most popular songs.
A statement was made by Lieutenant Colonel Colin Oliver, Commanding Officer 1Rifles, “It was an absolute privilege to host Ed and have him here spending time with the fantastic people who make up British Forces Cyprus,”
“These men and women sacrifice a lot, and we’re hugely grateful to Ed and the British Forces Foundation team for making the
time to visit British Forces Cyprus.”
One member of the military family expressed the joy of many others over the chance to meet Sheeran.
“How lucky are we! I can’t believe it. It means a lot that someone like him would take time to come and support us. We love you Ed.”
Before playing the big finale concert to a sold-out, record-breaking Cyprus audience at Larnaca’s Land of Tomorrow venue, Sheeran took photographs with families throughout the visit, leaving behind an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.
