Republican Turkish Party (CTP) leader Tufan Erhürman has sharply criticized the current approach to property issues in Northern Cyprus, particularly in the wake of new legislation enacted in Southern Cyprus regarding Greek Cypriot properties located in the North.
Speaking on the matter, Erhürman stressed that the new law passed by the Republic of Cyprus applies broadly: “It covers not only foreign contractors or real estate agents, not only Turkish or Turkish Cypriot contractors, but everyone. We have said many times that this business concerns everyone which includes the properties become as equivalent and sold,” he stated.
Drawing a comparison with the creation of the Immovable Property Commission (IPC), Erhürman underscored that the same careful and comprehensive approach taken during the Commission’s formation must now be replicated.
He took aim at Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar for what he described as reckless messaging. “Tatar said, ‘Go ahead and don’t be afraid,’ and now we’re facing the consequences of acting without a plan, without proper foresight,” he warned.
Erhürman also addressed reports of lawsuits filed against lawyers, realtors, and contractors in the İskele ( Trikomo)area, challenging the notion that Tatar could counter these actions with developments in Maraş( Varosha).
He reminded the public that Maraş had been a central issue in the previous presidential elections, yet five years on, no substantive results have emerged.
“There are people who don’t even understand the difference between the IPC and these lawsuits,” he said. “This is a closed chapter that continues to inflict damage. The country is not being properly governed.”
Concluding his remarks, Erhürman reiterated his belief that the only viable path to resolving the Cyprus issue lies in a federal solution based on bi-communal, bi-zonal, and political equality.
