European Sambo Championship kicks off in Limassol

More than 800 athletes from 26 countries take part in the European Sambo Championship that began on Wednesday in the coastal town of Limassol.

Vice President of the Cyprus Sports Organisation, Kalli Hadjiiosif, read out a welcoming address from Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides, at the opening ceremony. He said that Cyprus has proven over time its ability to successfully carry out such important events.

He recalled in his address that this is the second time that Cyprus is hosting this event, and expressed his belief that this time also the organisers will meet the very high expectations of the European Sambo Federation.
A key priority of the government, he said, “is the creation of modern sports infrastructure, as well as the improvement of existing ones, so that Cyprus has the appropriate facilities and our athletes can pursue their dreams”.

The President of the European Sambo Federation, Sergey Eliseev, the President of the Cyprus Sambo Federation, Marios Andreou, and the Deputy Mayor of Limassol, Dimos Katsis, also took the floor, wishing every success to the athletes.

The European Sambo Championship, which will wrap up on April 27, includes 14 daily finals that are broadcast live by the state television channels of Russia and Georgia, as well as online.
