Events in 20 museums and cultural institutions this May in Cyprus

Events will be organised by 20 museums and other cultural institutions, throughout the month of May, to mark International Museum Day and the European Night of Museums, most with free entrance, the Department of Antiquities and the Cyprus National Committee of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) said on Friday.

This year’s theme “The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities” is highlighting the transformative role of museums in society, the Antiquities Department and ICOM said in a press release.

“The museums will aim in focusing on how museums can navigate and contribute to a world undergoing profound social, technological, and environmental shifts. Museums are more than spaces of preservation—they are active participants in shaping sustainable and inclusive communities,” the press release adds.

Organised on and around the 18th of May each year, International Museum Day celebrations can last a day, a weekend, a whole week or a month. Participation in International Museum Day is growing internationally. In 2023, more than 37,000 museums participated in the event in about 158 countries and territories.

“In Cyprus, this year’s programme includes events organised by 20 museums and other cultural institutions, throughout the month of May,” it is noted.

The public can download the programme of events from the Department of Antiquities’ website (www.culture.gov.cy/da) and social media (Facebook and Instagram), as well as from the websites and social media platforms of the participating museums.
