Explosion at a gas station in Nicosia

Greek Cypriot authorities are investigating a possible bomb explosion that occurred early this morning at a Petrolina gas station located on Makarios Avenue, Nicosia.

According to Kathimerini News, eyewitnesses reported hearing a powerful explosion in the pre-dawn hours, followed by the sight of a car engulfed in flames at the Petrolina station, situated perilously close to the gas pumping facilities. A second vehicle also caught fire as a result of the explosion.

The vehicles, identified as a Mercedes and a Mini Cooper, were reportedly owned by a close friend of the gas station proprietor and had been parked on-site overnight. Notably, both cars bore English license plates, indicating recent importation from the United Kingdom.

Firefighters responded swiftly to the scene, managing to extinguish the flames within minutes. Their prompt action averted what could have potentially escalated into a major catastrophe, given the proximity of the inferno to the gas pumps and the surrounding residential area.

Initial findings suggest that the gas station’s camera view may have been obstructed by a gas pump, potentially impeding the identification of the perpetrator.

Police authorities have cordoned off the area and are investigating the incident. However, they have remained tight-lipped about any potential leads or motives behind the explosion.
