The series ‘Famagusta’, which was announced to be released on Netflix on September 20, sparked controversy before it’s release date.
The Turkish side criticized the series for distorting historical facts regarding the 1974 operation and slandering Turkish soldiers. Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar said that the series did not reflect the truth and that the series was an attempt to mislead the world. “It is inappropriate for a digital platform to be a tool for such an event with a one-sided narrative. We will have no choice but to also make a series to explain our side of the story.” Tatar remarked.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Türkiye also issued a statement regarding the ‘Famagusta’ series. It noted that the series in question serves the propaganda of the Greek Cypriot administration by distorting historical facts.
The statement stated that such attempts to distort the facts further strengthen Türkiye’s determination on the Cyprus issue. The Turkish Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism Dr. Batuhan Mumcu stated that the production in question ignored historical facts and that such broadcasts made with a one-sided perspective damages friendships and relationships between societies.
