In 2023, North Cyprus experienced a total of 544 fires, including three forest fires. These incidents led to legal proceedings against 58 individuals, highlighting the serious nature of the problem and the authorities’ efforts to address it.
Between January 1 and July 26, 2024, the number of fire incidents skyrocketed to 910. These fires resulted in substantial material damage, estimated at 129,806,115 TL (Turkish Lira).
When analyzing the potential causes of these fires, two main factors stood out: electrical short circuits and carelessly discarded cigarette butts.
The environmental impact of these fires has been severe. From January 1, 2023, to July 26, 2024, three forest fires occurred in the country, resulting in the destruction of 612 decares of forest area. Two of these forest fires were attributed to sparks from electrical wires, while the third was caused by excessive current draw in the medium voltage network.
