The United Nations (UN) Peacekeeping Force soldiers tried to intervene with the work carried out by the soldiers of the Security Forces Command (GKK) who were clearing weeds in the area on the Turkish Cypriot side of the Green Line in Lefkoşa (Nicosia).
The incident took place on Burhan Tan Street, close to the buffer zone. UN Peacekeeping Force soldiers crossed to the Turkish Cypriot side and tried to stop them; it has been reported. One of the GKK soldiers was assaulted by UN soldiers.
North Cyprus Foreign Minister Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu made a statement following the incident. They will not get away with this, I give my word!”, he said.

Meanwhile UNFICYP Spokesman Aleem Siddoque made a statement regarding the incident. He said that UNFICYP is aware of the allegations and is investigating the incident.

He added that “all UN peacekeepers are required to abide by the highest standards of conduct and are always held accountable for their actions.
We will not hesitate to take appropriate action following a thorough investigation.”
