Giorgos Koumas secures third year on FIFA Council

The President of the Cyprus Football Association (CFA), Giorgos Koumas, has been re-elected to the FIFA Council for a third consecutive year, according to a press release from the Association. His election was confirmed unanimously, without any opposing candidates, and reflects his compliance with FIFA’s strict eligibility criteria and requirements.

The ratification of Koumas’ position took place on Thursday during the UEFA Annual Congress held in Belgrade. The CFA described this achievement as a significant honour and a strategic milestone for the Association, its President, and Cypriot football as a whole.

The CFA emphasised that Cyprus’ ongoing involvement in such prestigious bodies elevates the country’s standing and signifies its active participation in key decision-making spheres within the global football framework.

Koumas has been at the helm of the CFA since 2018 and was first appointed to the FIFA Council in 2019, with subsequent re-elections occurring in 2021 and now in 2025. The CFA noted that this re-election, with no competitor, reinforces the confidence and recognition Koumas commands at both European and international levels.

Additionally, the CFA highlighted that Koumas’s position on the FIFA Council ensures his seat on the UEFA Executive Committee, further enhancing Cyprus’ institutional influence in European football.

Expressing his gratitude, Koumas stated, “It is a great honour for me personally, for the CFA, for Cypriot football, but especially for our Cyprus. My re-election to the FIFA Council confirms the consistent work and responsible presence of Cyprus in international football events. We continue with dedication and consistency to further strengthen our country’s position and reputation in world football,” he added.

This re-election is expected to bolster Cyprus’ contribution to the broader landscape of European and global football, encouraging further involvement in international football activities and events.
