The tourism industry in North Cyprus is experiencing a significant downturn, as revealed by recent data from the Tourism Planning Department. July 2024 marked a three-year low in hotel occupancy rates, continuing a worrying trend for the region’s tourism sector.
According to the report, July 2024 saw an occupancy rate of 56.4% in tourist accommodation facilities, representing an 11% decrease from July 2022’s 63.4% occupancy rate and a 4% drop from July 2023. This negative trend was also observed in June, with tourism professionals reporting that August was not a promising month either.
This decline is particularly concerning for North Cyprus, which has long relied on its “sea, sun, and sand” appeal to attract visitors. Industry veterans now claim that only the “sun” remains as a draw for tourists, suggesting a significant shift in traveler preferences or a decline in the quality of other attractions.
