Greek Cypriot Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis stated on Wednesday that the Greek Cypriot side is approaching the Geneva conference with full awareness of public statements and a realistic outlook.
Speaking after this week’s Cabinet meeting at the Presidential Palace, Letymbiotis highlighted the significance of the upcoming multilateral conference, convened under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General. He noted that this event is the result of persistent efforts to break the stagnation surrounding the Cyprus issue in recent years.
He emphasized that the direct involvement of the UN Secretary-General, despite global and regional challenges, demonstrates his continued commitment to resuming negotiations. “These are efforts we will always support within the framework set by United Nations Security Council resolutions,” he affirmed.
Letymbiotis also acknowledged the recent public statements from the Turkish Cypriot side but stressed that the Greek Cypriot side has conducted intensive preparatory work in coordination with the Greek Government. He referenced Monday’s meeting between the Greek Cypriot leader and the Greek Prime Minister as part of these preparations.
He reaffirmed that dialogue remains the only viable path toward progress in resolving the Cyprus issue, and the goal of the Geneva conference is to resume negotiations from where they were last interrupted.
Red Lines
Asked whether the Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar’s demands are red lines for the Greek Cypriot side, Letymbiotis clarified that they are not red lines for Greek Cypriot side, but they are the red lines of the international community.
“The entire international community, the United Nations Security Council, has repeatedly defined the agreed framework, which is none other than a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality. With this commitment, we have stated unequivocally, categorically, that we do not agree with anything else outside the agreed framework,” he noted.
