National Unity Party (UBP) General Secretary Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu criticized United Nations (UN) resolutions, claiming that they no longer reflect the situation on the island.
He called for a unified stance among political parties, both in government and opposition, to fight for sovereignty based on the island’s realities.
Speaking on Wednesday, Hasipoğlu referenced the 40 years of “fruitless federal negotiations”, stating: “This experience has shown us that the Greek Cypriot side has no intention of sharing governance and resources with us. This is a fact both UBP and the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) have experienced and accepted.”
Responding to recent comments by CTP leader Tufan Erhürman, who emphasized that a federal solution is not an obsession but is rooted in UN Security Council resolutions, Hasipoğlu highlighted discrepancies in how key parameters such as sovereignty, political equality, and bi- zonality are interpreted by the Greek Cypriot side.
Hasipoğlu recalled the 2017 Crans-Montana negotiations, where Greek Cypriot leader Nicos Anastasiades suggested exploring alternative models, including a two-state solution. He questioned whether the CTP’s ideological commitment to federation is dependent on decisions by the UN Security Council’s permanent members, saying, “Is CTP’s ideology now subject to the will of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council-namely the United States, Russia, France, China, and the United Kingdom?”
Hasipoğlu also addressed the failure of the UN to act on the Annan Plan, noting that despite the Turkish Cypriot community voting in favor of the plan, the UN did not follow through on its promise to end the unjust isolation of Turkish Cypriots. “How fair is it that the Annan Plan’s report, which called for lifting the unfair isolation of Turkish Cypriots, never became a Security Council resolution?” he asked.
He argued that political decisions should reflect the realities of Cyprus and not be dictated by the outdated and unjust decisions of UN permanent members.
