High dust concentrations recorded across Cyprus, public urged to exercise caution

High concentrations of dust have been detected in the atmosphere today, 27 March 2025, as reported by ground measurements from the Air Quality Monitoring Network run by the Department of Labour Inspection.

In a press release, the Department has advised the public—particularly vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and individuals with health conditions—to avoid outdoor activities until the dust levels decrease. The small size of respirable particles in dust can negatively impact human health.

As of the latest measurements taken at 08:00 AM, the recorded hourly dust concentrations were as follows: Nicosia at 101.6 μg/m³, Limassol at 80.8 μg/m³, Larnaca at 51.3 μg/m³, Paralimni at 29.7 μg/m³, Paphos at 95.6 μg/m³, Zygi at 48.4 μg/m³, and Ayia Marina Xyliatou at 96.7 μg/m³.

Employers are reminded to comply with the Safety and Health at Work Order of 2022, ensuring they take appropriate measures to assess and mitigate any risks their employees may encounter while working outdoors. It is recommended that workers in such environments employ suitable personal protective equipment.

For more detailed information on measured pollutant concentrations and real-time updates, the public can visit the website www.airquality.gov.cy or download the free mobile application “Air Quality Cyprus.”
