The Greek Cypriot side welcomes the appointment of María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar as the UN Secretary General’s Personal Envoy for the Cyprus problem.
Greek Cypriot Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis said that the appointment, is tangible proof of the UN Secretary-General’s personal commitment to the effort to resume the negotiations and demonstrates his will to contribute in a substantive way to breaking the deadlock and resuming the peace process.
“We express our unwavering commitment to reaching a just, viable and functional solution to the Cyprus problem, on the basis of the United Nations Security Council Resolutions and the agreed framework,” the Spokesperson said.
Moreover, he noted that the government is ready to cooperate closely and constructively with the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General, in view of the upcoming expanded conference in July, which the government aspires to be a beginning for the resumption of negotiations.
“We remain firmly committed to the goal of the reunification of Cyprus, as a modern, European and democratic state, without foreign guarantees, occupying troops and anachronistic invasive rights”, he stressed.
Letymbiotis further noted that we remain at the forefront of the diplomatic effort in a responsible and realistic manner and we are working with sincerity, consistency and determination for the end of the occupation and the reunification of our homeland.
“The hope for a solution is still alive and it is the duty of all of us to turn it into reality”, he concluded.
