‘Homeland and the Other’, poems from Turkish Cypriot authors


 

Themes of identity and belonging were explored with the attendance of Turkish Cypriot poets on Wednesday, in an event called, The Homeland and the Other’ (‘‘Yurt ve Oteki’’ – “H Πατρίδα και ο Άλλος”) held by the Turkology and the MiddleEast Studies Department of University of Cyprus.

The event was arranged by Börte Sagaster, Maria Siakalli, and Bulut Ünvan.

The event held in two sessions that welcomed a presentation by Tamer Öncül followed by poetry reading and discussions.

Attending poets were; Zeki Ali, Senem Gökel, Nafia Akdeniz, Emel Kaya, Neşe Yaşın, and Halil Karapaşaoğlu.

Authors read the poems in Turkish and the translations were read in Greek in real time.

The audience directed questions in both languages to uncover the layers of meaning with regards to identity and sense of belonging, which at times, were explored for the first time with the authors.
