Greek national C.K., who was arrested and taken to court yesterday for violating the military forbidden zone, was found to have previously committed robbery in south Cyprus.
Police Kadir Çetin gave details of the incident and said that the suspect had violated the 1st-degree military restricted zone without submitting a passport at the Lokmacı (Ledra Pedestrian crossing) in 2018 and left the northern territory without permission from the authorities.
Police said that C.K. was detected when he entered the north via Ercan Airport on July 7, 2024, and was arrested with a court order.
The suspect admitted in his voluntary statement that he crossed to South Cyprus from the Lokmacı (Ledra Pedestrian crossing) in 2018 without submitting his passport; the police said adding that the suspect had also robbed a bank in Limassol after crossing to South Cyprus and was imprisoned for three years.
When he was released from prison, he lived in Larnaca and went to Georgia four days ago. When he was refused entry into Georgia, and sent back to Larnaca he went to Istanbul via Bulgaria on July 6, 2024.
He then travelled via Bulgaria to Istanbul and from there he travelled to Ercan Airport where he was caught by the police.
During immigration control, it was detected that the suspect entered the north from Ercan Airport on 24.04.2018.
The police stated that the investigation was not completed and that there was a high probability that the suspect would escape prosecution if he was released, and requested that the suspect be sent to prison.
Judge Jale Ergüden, who evaluated the testimony before him, ordered the suspect to be sent to prison for a period not exceeding 2 months.
