Katie Cleride dies at 76

Katie Clerides, daughter of former Greek Cypriot leader Glafcos Clerides, has passed away at the age of 76, the Democratic Rally (Disy) announced on Monday.

In a statement, the party said that flags at all Disy premises were being flown at half-mast as a mark of respect and confirmed that it would cover all funeral expenses.

Born in London on May 10, 1949, Katie Clerides was fluent in English, Greek, German, and French. She studied sociology and law in London and later pursued political science in New York.

Her career in public service spanned more than four decades. She was first elected municipal councillor in 1986 and went on to serve three consecutive terms as a Disy MP beginning in 1991.

Beyond politics, Clerides was widely recognized as a dedicated advocate for peace, reunification, gender equality, children’s rights, and animal welfare.
